Man United faced Rangers in the penultimate match of the Europa League group stage early on January 24 (Vietnam time). The first chance belonged to Rangers in the 10th minute after the visitors lost the ball in midfield.
United dominated possession but failed to create much of a statement. Alejandro Garnacho fired a dangerous shot midway through the first half but Raskin headed it wide. Amad Diallo swooped in late on after a pass from Bruno Fernandes but Butland made a superb save.
In the second half, the Red Devils maintained the pressure and forced the opponent to make mistakes. In the 52nd minute, from a corner kick, Butland tried to punch the ball out, accidentally causing the ball to go back into the goal.
This was quite an unfortunate situation as this goalkeeper performed well throughout the match, making many reflexes to help Rangers escape.
Rangers struggled to create chances in the second half, but showed a potential threat on the counter-attack. Dessers beat Maguire and fired into the far corner in the 88th minute to equalise for Rangers.
In stoppage time, Martinez passed the ball into the penalty area, right to Fernandes. He made a beautiful volley, nutmegged Butland and sealed a 2-1 victory for Man United.
This result puts Ruben Amorim's team up to 4th place in the rankings, with 7 unbeaten matches. They still have to win against FCSB in the final match to ensure a direct ticket to the round of 16.
