Chelsea are currently planning to sell Ben Chilwell in the winter transfer window. Therefore, The Blues want the English defender to reduce his salary of 190,000 pounds/week, to make his departure smooth.
But according to The Sun, Chilwell has refused to accept a pay cut. This means Chelsea will have two options. One is to offer Ben Chilwell a large contract compensation, or two is to continue to support his wages while sending him on loan to another team.
This season, Ben Chilwell has only played 45 minutes, in the 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Barrow AFC in September. He has not even been registered in the Conference League, which is only for Chelsea's B team, suggesting there is no hope for the former Leicester City star at Stamford Bridge.
Coach Enzo Maresca himself advised the England international to leave the club last month, according to Metro: “Unfortunately, there are players who don’t play much with us in the tournaments, like Chilwell or Carney. Maybe they are the first ones to leave, because they train hard every day and also want to play.”
Chelsea signed Ben Chilwell for £50m in 2020. The England defender had a brilliant first three seasons, helping the Blues win the Champions League. However, he was injured and could no longer maintain his best form.
