In the summer of 2023, midfielder Cole Palmer moved from Man City to Chelsea. From being underused at the Etihad Stadium, he emerged as a phenomenon at the new team. Up to now, Palmer has scored 33 goals and 18 assists after 69 matches in the Premier League.
Given Palmer's form, pundit Chris Sutton did not hesitate to rate him as the best Three Lions player in the Premier League, according to Spaceport Sweden: "It's too easy to pick Cole Palmer. He's very, very natural. He seems to play a different game to most players in the Premier League. He's quicker than everyone else, thinks ahead of them and is also fantastic with the ball.
Look at the Panenka he scored against Tottenham. I scored one when I was at Celtic, but it will be different because Palmer is playing in a very tense derby. There are many different ways to take a penalty but it takes a lot of confidence to do it like that. That shows his character.”
While Palmer has continued to thrive at Chelsea, his former club Man City have fallen into crisis. With only 1 win in the last 12 matches, they have dropped to 7th place in the Premier League. Coach Pep Guardiola has also complained that Man City now do not have the best squad, due to too many injuries.
Chris Sutton also believes Pep was wrong to let Palmer go: “‘You have to remember how Man City let him go. Looking back now, Pep didn’t make many mistakes at the Etihad but selling Palmer was probably a mistake.
He is the best English player in the Premier League and also the English player I enjoy watching the most.”
