Man United took the lead through Lisandro Martinez, then Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scored to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead.
In the 80th minute, Amad Diallo brought the match back to balance. Man United could have won 3 points if Harry Maguire had not shot wide in the 90+7 minute.
With a point, Man United ended a three-game losing streak. “The way we really compete with Liverpool is the key to moving forward. I’m happy with the team’s performance, not happy with the result but I’m really angry about the other games,” Amorim said after the match.
In the previous 3 matches, Man United showed a weak face, when losing to Bournemouth, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. That made Amorim, Man United players receive a lot of criticism.
The Portuguese tactician stressed that his players were “afraid” of keeping the ball. He also said that he had come up with a therapeutic method to help the club out of the difficult situation.
“I'm trying to push Man United every day, sometimes maybe not in the best way, I always challenge these players in everything I do because I feel we, not just the players, but everyone at Man United are too comfortable.
So I think sometimes we need a shock, you can see today we are a different team. Not in terms of system, but in terms of how we face the opponent. I think that is a very good sign.
Obviously, we have lost three games in a row at home, some games we conceded two goals without doing anything,” Amorim added.
United, who had lost five of their last six league games before the clash with Liverpool, now face an FA Cup third-round tie with Arsenal on January 12, before returning to Premier League action with a home game against bottom club Southampton on January 16.
With United’s inconsistent form, Amorim stressed that preventing the team from falling further is his top priority. “We had some good games but then we lost ourselves. So the most important thing is to maintain consistency,” he said.
Amorim also defended Joshua Zirkzee after the striker passed the ball to Maguire in stoppage time instead of shooting the ball himself.
Maguire failed to capitalise on Zirkzee's pass, sending his shot over the bar with the final chance of the game.
"For me, I think it was the perfect decision. He could have shot, but he put the ball in the middle, the ball went slow so Harry could have scored but sometimes you can't take advantage of it. In my opinion, Zirkzee made the right decision," the Man United coach concluded.
