Coach Thomas Tuchel has signed a short-term contract with England effective from January 2025 and will last until the end of the 2026 World Cup finals.
After that, any contract extension between the two sides will depend on the "Three Lions" performance. Since 1966 until now, they have not been able to quench their thirst for titles.
Tuchel is considered a smart choice for the English Football Association (FA) to aim for major tournaments. Before that, Gareth Southgate had a controversial 8-year reign with the "Three Lions".
Southgate took on a leadership role in every aspect when leading the England team. Meanwhile, Tuchel is currently focusing on achieving the highest result at the 2026 World Cup. The FA's number 1 priority in the 2024-2028 strategy is to win another high-level international tournament after the women's team won EURO 2022.
Under Southgate, England have reached two consecutive EURO finals - in 2021 and 2024 - and the 2018 World Cup semi-final.
Tuchel officially started working with England at the beginning of this year, but he was present at the draw for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Zurich on December 13 last year.
Before announcing his first England call-up list, Tuchel lived in London and had an office at Wembley Stadium.
Last week, FA CEO Mark Bullingham said he felt comfortable with Tuchel signing a 2-year contract. Tuchel admitted at his press conference in October last year that his goal is to win the 2026 World Cup and put the second star on the England team's jersey.
The German has won three domestic titles as a coach - two at Paris St Germain and one at Bayern Munich. In addition, he and Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021.
"It's a good thing for me to be a part of such an achievement team. My goal is to help the team cross the line and try to put another star on the shirt.
I understand that winning the World Cup is a very difficult task. But when I came up with a plan for myself from January 2025 to the 2026 World Cup, I felt excited because it stuck with my passion. I will strive to push this group of players forward" - Tuchel said in October last year.
England will face Ukraine on 21 March and Ukraine on 24 March, both at Wembley, in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe. These are the first matches of the "Three Lions" under Tuchel.
