After the comeback against Southampton last week, Man United have contacted Lecce about Patrick Dorgu. The 20-year-old Danish star is known for his ability to play as a left-back. However, in some necessary situations, he can play as a winger quite effectively.
Man United have long wanted to strengthen the left wing when Luke Shaw was constantly injured and Tyrell Malacia did not meet expectations. Hesitation once appeared in Ruben Amorim's mind when he wanted defenders who could not only attack well, but also defend well.
This is the type of player Man United cannot find with the current personnel because since Erik ten Hag, the Dutch strategist has not built a winger with such a function.
After an initial period of training, Amorim put Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot in positions that allowed them to play their roles in the 3-4-3. However, both Mazraoui and Dalot performed only averagely, not particularly well in attack and neither did in defence. Therefore, Amorim needed someone more clearly offensive to increase the pressure from the flanks, which is something Man United have been lacking for months.
Man United, despite being a big team, have only scored more goals than five other teams in the Premier League this season, up to round 22 (27 goals). With the attacking personnel still very dull, the addition from the two wings is very important, but Amorim still has no one to respond. Amad Diallo has played well when he was assigned to play on the wing, but he cannot always stick to the wing because he has to break into the penalty area to score.
With Amad providing such a good cover on the right flank, United's left side needs a similar positive energy, which is why Dorgu has been targeted. Despite Lecce's relegation battle, Dorgu has scored three goals and provided one assist in 20 Serie A appearances this season. While the Danish star is important, Lecce are a small club and would find it difficult to turn down a big transfer fee from United.
The Dorgu move fits INEOS's philosophy. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his staff have set a target of young players, coming from continental European teams and being able to resell at a good price. That's why Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee have arrived at Old Trafford, despite the fact that the chances of them being resold at a good price are not really bright.
Man United are also planning to sell players to make the deal for Patrick Dorgu smoother. Currently, all attention is on Alejandro Garnacho when the Argentine striker is very close to Chelsea with a rumored price of 70 million Euros. After the win over Rangers in the Europa League, Garancho walked around Old Trafford to thank the fans. After that, he posted a short status on social media with the thank you.
Not only Garnacho, it is possible that Casemiro and Antony will soon reach an official agreement to leave in the summer of 2025, thereby giving Man United early financial commitments to make it easier to spend in the future. These calculations by INEOS are very fundamental because the owners want Man United to not get into any more financial troubles.
