On the evening of October 12, the Vietnamese team was held to a 1-1 draw by India in a friendly match during FIFA Days in October 2024.
Notably, striker Nguyen Van Quyet did not play in the starting lineup. He was sent onto the field by coach Kim Sang-sik in the 71st minute to replace Van Toan.
In the last 25 minutes of the second half, Van Quyet made a difference for the Vietnamese team. There were at least 3 situations where the striker from Hanoi Club skillfully dribbled the ball and created scoring opportunities for his teammates. However, Quang Hai and Tien Linh both missed the ball regrettably.
Van Quyet's performance received much praise from fans. Although he is over 30 years old, this player still ensures his physical strength and maintains stable performance.
However, after the match, Nguyen Van Quyet decided to say goodbye to the Vietnamese team. The match against India was his last match wearing the national team jersey. This left many regrets for the audience.
In the post-match press conference, coach Kim Sang-sik confirmed: "I had a discussion before the match, Van Quyet talked about his plan. The reason I called Quyet is because I felt there was a lack of strikers next to Tien Linh."
Striker Nguyen Van Quyet is one of the exemplary players of Vietnamese football. Before saying goodbye, he had 60 matches for the national team and scored 16 goals. In addition, the striker from Thach That was the captain in the period 2017-2019.
During his career, Van Quyet participated in 5 AFF Cups (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022) and won the 2018 AFF Cup with the Vietnamese team.
