On the afternoon of January 6, the Vietnamese team arrived at Noi Bai Airport after winning the 2024 ASEAN Cup in Thailand. Striker Xuan Son was transferred directly to Vinmec International General Hospital to prepare for surgery, while the other members moved to the Government Office to receive the Labor Medal.
Xuan Son’s surgery will take place at 7:00 p.m. He will undergo intramedullary nailing. This is a minimally invasive and effective method that helps patients move and recover sooner.
Xuan Son is expected to need 5-8 months to fully recover from his injury. If he recovers well, the 27-year-old player could return to the field by the end of this year.
Before entering the surgery, Son shared: "Yesterday was scary, I was tired and in a lot of pain. But I will try to get through this difficult period."
In the second leg of the ASEAN Cup final at Rajamangala Stadium on the evening of January 5, Xuan Son was injured in the 32nd minute after trying to stretch to pass the ball. After a few minutes of first aid, he was quickly taken by ambulance to a hospital in Bangkok. Doctors diagnosed him with a fracture of the fibula and tibia of his right leg.
At the ASEAN Cup 2024, despite only playing 5 matches, the 27-year-old striker scored 7 goals and 2 assists. At the end of the tournament, he won 2 individual titles: Best Player and Top Scorer.
