Quang Ngai - A 30-month-old baby boy had nosebleeds and prolonged shortness of breath for many days. When admitted to the hospital, doctors discovered a living parasite in the baby's nose.

On the morning of December 31st, leaders of Quang Ngai Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that the health of the baby boy who had just been removed by doctors from a foreign object, a lizard, still alive in his nose, has now stabilized.

Previously, on December 30, the Department of Medical Examination (Quang Ngai Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital) received patient N.D.D (30 months old), residing in Dang Thuy Tram commune, for examination in a state of prolonged runny nose, occasional runny nose.

According to the family, the symptoms appeared about a week ago. The family took the child to a clinic near the house and was diagnosed with rhinitis and given oral medication. However, after 7 days of treatment, the condition did not improve, so the family decided to take the child to the hospital.

Family members added that about a week before the symptoms appeared, the child followed his parents to the fields and had a bath in the stream. After that, the child showed abnormal signs such as itchy nose, difficulty breathing when sleeping, nosebleeds, and more obvious symptoms when the child was bathing.

Through clinical examination and nose endoscopy, doctors discovered a stream lizard parasiting in the patient's nose cavity. The team performed interventional endoscopy and successfully removed the lizard about 3cm long safely. After the procedure, the child's condition stabilized, no more nosebleeds.

Master, Doctor Tran Thi Kim Tuyen - Joint specialist of Ophthalmology - Otolaryngology - Dentistry - Maxillofacial Surgery (Quang Ngai Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital) recommends that parents should limit bathing young children in streams and ponds, especially in mountainous areas; do not let children drink stream water directly, it is necessary to boil and cool it before use.

When children have symptoms such as prolonged nosebleeds, nasal congestion on one side, nasal discharge or unexplained shortness of breath, parents need to take their children to a medical facility specializing in ORL for endoscopy, diagnosis and timely treatment.
