Kindness also determines appearance
According to research, people who are perceived as kind and empathetic are perceived as more beautiful and physically attractive.
Appearance is one of the first things people notice about another person when they first meet them. However, personality traits like friendliness and humor also play an important role in shaping physical attractiveness and how it is perceived.
Study author Natalia Kononov - Fulbright postdoctoral fellow at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (USA) - said the study focused on the meaning of acts of kindness, cooperation, and helping and their impact on physical aspects.
Kindness can actually enhance physical attractiveness. While looks may make a first impression, a person's kind actions and character have a more lasting and powerful impact on others.
Research results
The study was conducted with more than 4,000 participants to understand how kindness affects how others perceive physical appearance. Actual prosocial behaviors, descriptions of acts of kindness, or fictional situations involving such behavior were used as tools in the study.
Researchers observed a strong link between prosocial actions and higher ratings of physical attractiveness for people who frequently performed acts of kindness toward those around them.
Kind people tend to be pleasant, making others feel comfortable and safe around them. Acts of kindness, such as helping others or showing genuine concern, can attract attention and create a positive impression.
Besides, kind people often know how to listen and understand other people's feelings. They also have a positive and confident attitude, which can make them more attractive in the eyes of others.
“Our findings show this connection clearly; acts of kindness really do make us see people as more beautiful,” says Natalia Kononov.
While appearance may play a role in first impressions, kindness can increase attraction in a lasting and profound way. Kindness and sincerity are always a powerful attraction to others.
