Bachelor shocked by the harshness of the labor market

Quỳnh Chi |

Bachelor's degrees carry great expectations but soon face the fierce competition of the labor market.

Ms. Tran Mai Nguyen, 23 years old, from Phu Tho, graduated with honors in business administration from a university in Hanoi City. Confident with a good degree, "as" Deputy Secretary of the school's Youth Union, good English communication, Ms. Nguyen thinks that career opportunities will be wide open in the near future...

After learning about recruitment information online, Ms. Nguyen submitted her application online to 4 companies in Thanh Xuan and Cau Giay wards (Hanoi). 4 times being called for interviews, Ms. Nguyen also received a headshick from the employer after the interview ended.

I imagined that I would be asked about my knowledge, my desired salary or some information about the job position I was recruited for... Unexpectedly, the staff gave many very unfortunate situations related to work, teamwork skills, communication skills... that made me lose my answers. In fact, these are also situations I have never experienced before... - Ms. Nguyen said.

After more than half a year of not finding a job, Ms. Nguyen asked her parents for an "accident" allowance for another half year to apply for an extra job and learn soft skills... "I applied to work as a sales staff at a fashion store on Hue Street (Hanoi). I hope that working with many customers every day will strengthen communication skills; at the same time, many soft skills in behavior, situations... will also be improved" - Ms. Nguyen said.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung, 23 years old, from Hai Phong, graduated with honors in Graphics in Hanoi. Since his college years, Mr. Trung has collaborated with many studios and has had a stable job with a good income. Graduating from university in August 2024, Mr. Trung started his life completely without financial support from his family.

In addition to the collaboration, I applied for a job to have a fixed rehabilitation to ensure the basic rights of workers, but over the past year, this wish has not come true. The comfort of being a collaborator is completely different from becoming an employee of an agency. Up to now, my income is still enough to live on, but I am still truly a cotton worker in the city" - Mr. Trung shared.

Sharing with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Le Quang Trung - former Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Employment said that in reality, there is a gap between the desire and image of young workers entering the market and the harshness of the labor market. In the current context, even workers who have worked for many years and are attached to deep professional work are likely to lose their jobs or be replaced. Therefore, challenges for young workers are inevitable.

Even when they have found a job, many young workers still cannot overcome the pressure from work, the demands from reality that they could not have imagined before. Even their tolerance is "up front" in the face of a unique corporate culture. That is not to mention, the majority of young workers are Gen Z, people with personality and not as much patience as the previous generation, Mr. Trung emphasized.

Mr. Trung said that to improve this situation, it is necessary to start from the workers themselves. They have to be more realistic in thinking, put aside the overly optimistic images about future work, and work hard, "hugging" a lot with reality to minimize confusion when going to work.
