Get paid 300% salary
The order was large and had to be shipped urgently, so Ms. Lo Thi Yen's company (30 years old, a worker in Bac Giang) announced that workers would have to work overtime on New Year's Day. For Ms. Yen, this information did not affect her much because she had no plans to go anywhere during the New Year holiday.
"My hometown is Dien Bien, more than 500km away from the company. The round trip takes a whole day and the bus fare is 1 million VND. Even during the New Year holiday, I don't dare go back to my hometown," said Ms. Yen.
According to the female worker, only those who live nearby feel disappointed because they have to register to go to work, while those who live far away feel normal, even want to go to work. Because working on New Year's Day pays higher than usual, and only need to work for nearly one more month to get a long Lunar New Year holiday to return to their families.
Staying to work overtime on New Year's Day, Ms. Yen was paid 300% of her salary by the company, about 550,000 VND. With a New Year's bonus of 200,000 VND, the female worker said she was able to buy quite a few things. "I will spend about 500,000 VND to buy clothes for my children, and the remaining 250,000 VND to buy breakfast for work every day," Ms. Yen shared.
However, Ms. Yen said that the overtime pay on New Year's Day is only one and a half times higher than the actual pay on a normal day because the company calculates based on the basic salary. If calculated based on the actual salary, the female worker can receive more than 1 million VND.
Originally from Thanh Hoa, Mr. Tran Van Hai (30 years old) - an electronic component assembly worker at Thang Long Industrial Park (Dong Anh, Hanoi) registered to work for 2 days on the occasion of New Year's Day.
"We have 2 days off, the company lets workers voluntarily register to work. I don't have to go back to my hometown, so when I received the notice, I immediately registered," said Mr. Hai, adding that after many years of working away from home, he always tries to work on holidays. Because working on this occasion helps his salary increase by 300%. This is considered the cost of covering the monthly rent for male workers.
Income increased but only received support money
For the beauty service industry, holidays are the busiest time for customers. Therefore, when deciding to work in this field, whether you want to or not, workers still have to choose to stay and serve customers.
Working in the skin care industry, Ms. Pham Thi Tam (26 years old) living in Cau Giay District, Hanoi shared that she has to work on Sundays and holidays because these are the busiest days.
"We have 4 days off in a month. Tet is off from the afternoon of the 29th or 30th until the 5th, then we have to go back to work" - Ms. Tam said. However, working on holidays and days off also brings in much more income than usual. Sharing details, Ms. Tam said that she not only has a salary, but also sells many products, and also has support money and "tips".
“This year, we were supported with 100,000 VND for extra work during the New Year. On this day, there are many customers, so it is easier to advise and sell more products. Last year, I received nearly 1 million VND in tips,” Ms. Tam shared.
According to Ms. Tam, on the holiday, she had to work an extra hour, and could only go home at 9pm. After finishing work, her body was extremely tired, so the female employee said she just wanted to have a light snack and rest, and had no mind to go out or shop.
