Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company will double the amount of content from recommended accounts on Instagram and Facebook platforms by the end of 2023. He said that suggested content accounts for about 15% on Facebook and that percentage is higher than on Instagram.
The push, which Zuckerberg calls building a Exploration tool, is a completely new start to the previous display of posts from Facebook and Instagrams friends lists.
This change is to compete with TikTok's use of AI to display videos no matter where they come from. That approach has quickly made TikTok one of the most used apps in the world and created a completely new creative platform.
At Meta's Q2/2022 meeting on July 27, Zuckerberg explained, "Al found additions that people found interesting, which increased the level of engagement and quality of our data sources."
Meta will also use AI to recommend all the content that people share publicly on their services, such as links or photos, he said. That said, I think what were doing is going to be quite unique, Mark added.
In addition, Meta CEO also hinted that TikTok only focuses on short videos. I dont think people would want to be limited to one format, the director added.
Facebook's last major change in content proposal was in 2018, when Zuckerberg announced a strategy focused on encouraging "menitorious social interaction" (MSI) among friends in the Newsroom. When it was introduced, Zuckerberg predicted that it would lead to reduced social media usage time but give users a better feeling.
Research shows that when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it is good for our health, he said at the time. On the other hand, reading articles or watching videos passively even if they are entertaining or informative may not be as good.
Meta's business is slowing down and Facebook's user base is getting old. On July 27, he said that people have completely changed sharing in the Newsletter and instead communicated via private messages.
A social trend were seeing is that instead of people just interacting through comments on their Newsfeed, most people find interesting content on their newsfeeds and then share it with friends and interact via text messages, Facebooks CEO added.
