Information on the Hanoi Police Electronic Information Portal on January 23 said that, in addition to anonymous and convenient features, the Telegram application is being exploited by bad guys to commit crimes.
To ensure the safe use of the Telegram application, the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (Hanoi City Police) recommends that users have the following methods to protect and use Telegram accounts securely from the available utilities of the application:
turn on the two-factor authentication feature: turn on this feature for a Telegram account by going to the -> private and security settings -> two-step verification. For the English version: Settings -> privacy and Security -> Two-step Verification.
Check the device in which the account is used: When a user suddenly receives a strange login notification, it may be a scammer. Regularly check the devices that are logged into the account (sect the -> device settings) to check and immediately delete devices that are not used by you. For the English version: Settings -> devices.
turn off notification of receiving messages from strangers to avoid scam messages: Select the installation -> privacy and security -> new messages from strangers -> Archive and Mute. The feature is only available on Telegram Premium. If not necessary, hide your personal phone number on Telegram as follows: Go to Settings -> Private and secure -> Private: Phone number -> No one. For the English version: Settings -> privacy and Security -> privacy: Phone number -> Nobody.
Prevent strangers from arbitrarily adding themselves to groups by: Setup -> Private and secure -> Group and channel -> Contact me. For English: Settings -> privacy and Security -> Group & Channel -> My contacts.
turned off automatic file download mode from groups to avoid loading files containing malware: Setup -> Data and storage -> turn off: Automatically Loading multimedia. For the English version: Settings -> Data and Storage -> turn off: Auto-Download Media.
Hanoi City Police also recommend that Telegram users should note: Absolutely do not click on strange links. If you accidentally click on a strange link, absolutely do not follow the instructions on the website of the strange link, do not fill in any personal information, account, or password through this link.
At the same time, regularly update the Telegram application to the latest version through the CHPlay application store (for players with Android operating system) and Appstore (for Iphone devices).
Also according to the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, users need to be vigilant when "naturally" receiving loan requests, loans, and money transfers via social networks. When detecting a suspicious case, users need to immediately report it to the nearest police station.
