Huawei, Vivo, Xiaomi benefit from electronic subsidy policies

The Chinese Government's subsidy program for electronics purchases has helped Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi benefit significantly.

According to the latest data from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Huawei technologies led sales in the smartphone market in China in January 2025, thanks to the government's subsidy program for electronics purchases. Following them are Vivo and Xiaomi.

According to Counterpoint Research, in January 2025, more than 29 million smartphones were sold in China. Of which, Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi account for a total of 53.8% of the market share.

Total sales in the market increased by 17% over the same period last year, with phones priced from 2,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan (275 to 688 USD) growing the strongest.

The Chinese smartphone market has been boosted by a government program that will take effect from January 20, 2025. Accordingly, consumers are given a 15% subsidy - up to 500 yuan for each purchase - when buying smartphones, tablets and smartwatches priced under 6,000 yuan.

According to Counterpoint data, smartphone sales from January 20 to 26, the first week of the program, skyrocketed by 65% compared to the same period last year to more than 9.5 million units.

To make the most of the government's subsidy policies, retailers and manufacturers have proactively discounted some models. This action has turned the 2025 Lunar New Year in China into one of the best-selling times for digital products, boosting market growth.

Counterpoint Research predicts that this policy will boost mobile phone sales in China by 2-3% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to last year.
