Recently, many posts have appeared on social media revealing that the Instagram platform is sharing the exact location of users with those who follow them.
However, Instagram has denied these statements and taken measures to enhance data protection for users.
Is Instagram sharing the exact location of users with followers?
A posted that is being widely shared on Instagram has stated that if youre using an iPhone, Instagram will allow the iOS operating system to share your exact location with followers when you the your location in posts or stories.
According to the above accusation, if you label a location in a story or post on Instagram, such as Austin, Texas, Instagram will display the correct location instead of the general location to your followers.
However, the initial source of the statement said that this was due to a change in the "recent iOS update" rather than a new feature from Instagram.
The post went further, revealing that "there are followers and criminals accused of using this feature to search for people and break into users' homes or cars."
However, this is unfounded as Apple has not made any changes to location sharing and Instagram has also denied the above information.
In response to the allegations and to clarify the issues, Instagram quickly commented: We do not share the users location with others. We use location when we want to identify a location if you add it to your post or story, but we don't disclose your exact location. If you want to change your location settings, go to your shared device settings.
In a Twitter post, in order to address the allegations that are spreading rapidly on social media sites, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri also said:
Location services are part of the device setup on your phone, not a new feature from Instagram and the app only supports things like location cards. We do not share your location with other users.
How to manage your location
According to 9to5mac, from Instagram, the original post or Mosseri all mentioned the location sharing settings of devices from the Apple technology giant, so let's look back at how iOS allows users to manage their location data.
Regarding how to manage sharing user locations with third-party apps, iOS has three options:
Under these three options, there is also a switch button to Express Location. If it is enabled, the app will be allowed to use your specific information. When turned off, the app can only determine the near correct location.
Users can find these options in the Settings app, then scroll down to the specific app and click on each of those options.
Its up to you to determine the settings you want to use for each of your apps. However, to ensure security, the general advice for users is to turn off the "Excuse Location" option for most applications.
In addition, you can take steps to avoid exposing sensitive information as well as your location data.
Finally, social media posts about Instagram sharing users' exact positions with their followers are incorrect.
