Rumors that some iPhone models will be equipped with 12GB of RAM this year are no longer new. In fact, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted this RAM upgrade since August last year, right after Apple announced Apple Intelligence at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event.
However, now, the news that new iPhone models will be upgraded with RAM is becoming even clearer.
In a report to investors, cited by the news site 9to5 Mac, analyst Jeff Pu from GFHK Tech Research confirmed that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be equipped with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, compared to the current 8GB. According to him, the growing demand for AI features has prompted PC and smartphone manufacturers to upgrade RAM memory on their devices.
In 2023, only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be equipped with 8GB of RAM, while non-Pro models will only have 6GB. Last year, Apple upgraded RAM on iPhone 16 and 16 Plus to 8GB, helping these devices support Apple Intelligence. Similarly, the newly launched iPhone 16e model also has 8GB of RAM and is compatible with Apple's AI features.
Increasing RAM will not only make the iPhone 17 Pro more durable in the future, but it is also a sign that Apple Intelligence will have new features that require more RAM, and may only be available on the most premium iPhone models. Previously, Apple also upgraded the entire Mac lineup, including the MacBook Air M2, with a minimum RAM standard of 16GB.
According to leaked sources, the entire iPhone 17 series will have major design changes. Apple is expected to adopt a new camera layout and video recording features to attract vlog-loving users.
In addition, the company may also launch an ultra-thin iPhone model, located between the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro. This device may replace the current Plus line.
Apple is expected to announce a new series of iPhones in September this year.
