What is an E-Ink screen?
E-Ink is the abbreviation of Electronic Ink, a technology commonly used on e-commerce platforms. The E-Ink screen can only display two tones of black and white and gives readers the feeling of reading a book on printed paper.
The first studies on E-Ink technology were conducted at the MIT Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Patented in 1996. Currently, the copyright of this technology is held by E-Ink Corporation.
What is special about the E-Ink screen?
The characteristic of E-Ink displays is that they only use gray, black and white tones to recreate images, similar to printing paper and are often used in devices such as e- readers, some types of phones, special watches...
Unlike conventional display technology, with E-Ink, when a color element is placed in a location on the screen, it will almost always be there, and there is no need to provide power to maintain that state. This leads to two outstanding features of e-ink screens: very low refresh rate and very low power consumption.
E-Ink displays are always advertised as less harmful to the eyes than regular LCD displays, as well as extending battery life to many days. However, because of the low frequency of freshness, the E-Ink screen is unlikely to be used to display videos as well as other color images.
Advantages of E-Ink
The ability to display it outdoors is good, users will not be blindsided because the screen will display like printing paper.
Protect your eyes, limit eye strain when used for long periods of time. Readers with E Ink screens that do not broadcast blue light cause insomnia are like tablet & smartphone. At the same time, the light of the device does not radiate directly to the reader's eyes.
Saving energy, helping the devices have a very long usage time, lasting for several weeks or even a month.
Disadvantages
Reading in low brightness conditions is a disadvantage for E-Ink because this display technology has a low contrast ratio. However, many current reading machines are equipped with backlights, but the lighting of the E-Ink screen is not as bright as equipment using LCD screens.
The frequency of the refreshment is very low, so the E-Ink screen can hardly be used to display videos, as well as other color images.
