Reports indicate that many devices are not recognizing taps and swipes. The issue affects multiple models, including the new iPhone 16 and older devices like the iPhone 14.
Users on Reddit reported areas of the screen becoming unresponsive, causing them to not be able to tap, swipes to be ignored, and difficulty scrolling or pressing buttons. This issue is especially noticeable when using the on-screen keyboard, leading to typos.
9to5Mac was the first to highlight the issue. Initially, it was thought that only iPhone 16 Pro models were affected. But user reports suggest that the issue is more widespread and likely software-related. The main culprit appears to be an overly sensitive touch rejection algorithm in iOS 18, which is designed to reject unwanted touches.
This issue seems to only occur when the device is unlocked and in use.
Additionally, some users have reported particular difficulty with the new camera control button, but it's unclear whether this is directly related or a separate issue.
If the touchscreen issue is software-based, Apple may fix it in a future update. However, the company has yet to respond to the issue.
