China plants chips into the brain to control robots by thinking

Chinese scientists have just launched a brain-computing interface system called NeuCyber Array (BMI) at the opening ceremony of the Zhongguancun 2024 forum in Beijing.

A video presented at the forum shows the monkey being tied to its hands and planted with electrodes in its brain controlling the independent robot arm to grasp the strawberry by using its thinking.

Mr. Luo Minmin - Director of the China brain Research Institute - said that the BMI system has narrowed the gap in high-performance brain-PC interface technology. BMI plays a IT highway for the brain, thereby communicating with peripheral devices that interact with humans and machines, according to CGTN.

BMI technology grasps the subtle changes in electrical signals from nerve cells and decodes the intention of the brain, to recognize acting that controls thinking. This is considered a form of artificial intelligence.

The BMI system has three main components: a high-performance flexible microchip board, a high-speed neural signal channel system, and a general neural encryption algorithm based on a continuation control mechanism.

Currently, many technology companies have developed brain-PC interfaces, including Elon Musk's Neuralink. Neuralink was founded in 2017 with many recent breakthroughs. In March 2024, Neuralink performed a chip culture for a 29-year-old patient paralyzed from a lifebuoy shock who could play chess using the patient's own thinking.
