What to eat when exercising in hot weather?

In the summer, hot weather makes the body easily dehydrated, tired and reduced endurance when exercising.

In that weather, without a suitable diet, exercisers are very likely to fall into a state of exhaustion, cramps or physical decline.

Therefore, choosing suitable foods before and after exercise plays an important role in maintaining energy, supporting body recovery and protecting health during high temperature days.

The first thing to pay attention to is to replenish enough water for the body. When exercising in hot weather, the body sweats a lot to regulate temperature, leading to dehydration and electrolyte loss.

Therefore, exercisers should drink water regularly before, during and after exercise instead of waiting for thirst to drink. In addition to filtered water, you can supplement coconut water, low-sugar fruit juice or natural electrolyte drinks to replenish minerals such as potassium and sodium.

Besides, water-rich fruits such as watermelon, orange, grapefruit, dragon fruit or pineapple are very good choices for people who regularly exercise in the summer. These fruits not only help cool down but also provide vitamin C and antioxidants, supporting fatigue reduction and strengthening resistance. Bananas are also foods that should be prioritized because they are rich in potassium, which helps limit cramps after strenuous exercise.

In addition to fruits, exercisers need to supplement healthy carbohydrates to maintain energy. Foods such as oats, whole wheat bread, sweet potatoes, or brown rice help provide stable energy without feeling heavy. About 1–2 hours before exercising, you should eat lightly so that your body has enough energy to function more effectively.

After exercising, the body needs to be restored with quality protein sources. Chicken, fish, eggs, yogurt or beans are suitable choices to help regenerate muscles and reduce fatigue. At the same time, you should increase green vegetables to supplement vitamins, minerals and support the digestive system to function better in hot weather.

Conversely, exercisers should limit greasy foods, fast food, carbonated soft drinks or drinks high in caffeine because these types can make the body lose water faster. Eating too much before exercise can also easily cause discomfort, affecting exercise effectiveness.

Exercising in hot weather not only requires perseverance but also a reasonable diet. Eating the right food and supplementing enough water will help the body maintain endurance, recover better and limit health risks in the summer.
