Soc Trang gateway district meets new rural standards

    Soc Trang - Chau Thanh District is the 5th district-level unit to meet the standards for completing the task of building New Rural Areas.

    On December 31, Soc Trang province held a ceremony to announce the Prime Minister's Decision recognizing Chau Thanh district as meeting New Rural Area (NTM) standards. This is a district with a Khmer ethnic group accounting for nearly 48%, Kinh ethnic group accounting for 49% and Chinese ethnic group accounting for 3%.

    According to Mr. Truong Quoc Dien - Chairman of Chau Thanh District People's Committee - when the construction of new rural areas began in 2010, all communes in the district were extremely disadvantaged; the rate of poor and near-poor households accounted for nearly 36%; the average new rural criteria of communes only met 4.5 criteria; the poor rural infrastructure did not meet the needs of socio-economic development; the livelihood of people was mainly ineffective agricultural production; the average income per capita was only about 29 million VND/person/year.

    Up to now, the economic structure has shifted towards increasing the proportion of industry, construction and services (from 43% in 2010 to now reaching 62%). 100% of schools in the area have met national standards; cultural institutions have been invested in to meet the needs of entertainment, physical training and sports for the people; security and order have been basically ensured, the appearance of the countryside is increasingly spacious and clean; the material and spiritual life of the people has been constantly improved, the rate of poor and near-poor households has decreased to only 3%.

    Mr. Vuong Quoc Nam - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province - said that the whole province has 73 communes meeting the new rural standards, reaching 101% of the target of the Provincial Party Committee Resolution by 2025, completing 1 year ahead of schedule; 29 communes meeting the advanced new rural standards, 3 communes meeting the model new rural standards, 5 district-level units meeting the standards to complete the task of building new rural areas (Nga Nam town, Vinh Chau town, My Xuyen district, Cu Lao Dung district and Chau Thanh district).
