An Giang - The 2025 low-emission high-quality specialized rice production model has 11 models with a total area of 543.5 hectares and 355 participating households.

On September 15, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in coordination with the People's Committee of An Giang province held a conference to summarize the pilot model of high-quality, low-emission rice production in the summer-autumn crop of 2025 in the Mekong Delta.

Mr. Ngo Cong Thuc - Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee said that the growth rate of the agricultural sector in the first 9 months is estimated at 3.71%. In 2025, the province's rice industry will produce more than 1.3 million hectares of rice, with an estimated rice output of about 8.8 million tons.

After the merger, An Giang is the leading province in the country in terms of rice area and output with great development potential. However, besides the achieved results, An Giang rice production still faces many difficulties and challenges. Agricultural production is increasingly affected by climate change, especially in rice production.

After the merger of provinces, An Giang has directed the review and integration of the Plan to implement the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice to reduce low emissions, so that departments, branches and localities can organize and implement. According to the new draft plan of the province, An Giang will have about 351 thousand hectares of rice participating in the Project, accounting for more than 35% of the rice area implemented by the Prime Minister's Project for approval.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection - Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that the model of high-quality specialized rice production with low emissions in the summer and fall of 2025 has implemented 11 models with a total area of 543.5 hectares and 355 participating households has achieved certain results. Specifically, reducing rice production, the amount of seeds sown decreased by 5065% (70130 kg/ha); medium fertilizers decreased by 31.3%; reducing 13 sprayings of pesticides.

100% of straw collection models, of which 5/10 models sell straws (307,000 - 1,000,000 p/ha), the rest are used as fertilizer or root incubation for plants (due to wet straw).

Notably, the economic efficiency of the models, reducing production costs by 1.7 - 4.9 million VND/ha compared to outside the models; profits from 14.5 - 36.3 million VND/ha, increasing compared to outside the models by 4.6 - 15.8 million VND/ha...

Up to now, the project implementation area has reached 354,839 hectares, nearly 2 times the plan, with more than 200,000 households applying at least one sustainable farming criterion. Orienting the 2025-2026 Winter-Spring crop, localities will continue to expand the area, promote Mechanization, link businesses and cooperatives, and link production with the consumption market.

At the workshop, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment announced the draft amendment to the High-quality and Low-Emission Rice Production Procedure for the Mekong Delta. This is a completed step to concretize the goals of the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the period of 2024-2025.

The process amendment is built on the basis of receiving opinions from localities, cooperatives and enterprises, ensuring compliance with production practices and consumption market demand. This is an important basis for localities to continue expanding the cultivated area in a green and sustainable direction, contributing to increasing farmers' income and affirming the Vietnamese rice brand in the international market.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam affirmed that the results of implementing models of high-quality, low-emission specialized rice production points for the summer-autumn crop in 2025 will contribute to realizing the goal of the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice that the Government has directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to implement. This is an important premise in restructuring the rice industry to replicate the model in the coming crops, moving towards forming sustainable commodity rice production zones, increasing farmers' income and meeting international market requirements.
