Quang Ninh - Dinh Coc with its ancient architecture is a place associated with the festival of going down to the fields to pray for national peace and prosperity, and bumper crops.
Dinh Coc National Relic, also known as Phong Coc communal house, is located in Phong Coc ward, Quang Ninh province with a system of ironwood structures and sophisticated carving art, is a typical architectural and artistic work, imbued with the unique historical and cultural values of Ha Nam island region. The communal house yard is paved with blue stone. The communal house has been ranked as a National-level architectural and artistic relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism according to Decision No. 191/VH-QD dated March 22, 1988.In front of the communal house is a small river flowing through (the communal house gate river). The name Coc communal house originates from the geographical location of the land where the communal house was built, resembling the shape of a coc bird, the communal house is placed in the position of the coc bird's body. The communal house worships the village tutelary god and the God of Agriculture. The village tutelary god is Tu Vi Thanh Nuong. Legend has it that these four gods responded to help King Tran Anh Tong fight Champa in the 12th year of Hung Long (1290) and helped King Le Thanh Tong pacify the Champa army in the first year of Hong Duc (1470), and were conferred the title "Thuong Dang Than" by the courts.In front of the communal house, there are still intact two large main doors made of ironwood carved with dragon and phoenix images.Dinh Coc with the skillful and sophisticated multi-layered canal carving technique, mainly using blocks and liberal layouts to express living and spiritual themes reaching the peak of village communal house carving in the 17th and 18th centuries. This was a period when architecture and village communal house carving in Vietnam developed brilliantly.Dinh Coc still preserves an ancient stone stele recording the history of the communal house.Dinh Coc is associated with the field-going festival. In the space of rivers and islands of Ha Nam, Quang Ninh, rich in tradition, the field-going festival is not only the opening ceremony for a new crop, but also a vivid symbol of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was painstakingly nurtured and passed down through generations by the Tien Cong masters. The festival is held annually with the meaning of praying for national peace and prosperity, bumper crops, and prosperous and happy people's lives. This year, the festival is held for 2 days, from July 18-19.In addition to the ceremony part, in the festival part, there is also excitement with traditional boat racing competitions (swimming poles, beam swimming), Cheo singing in the communal house yard and many unique folk activities, imbued with the identity of the Bach Dang river mouth region. When the festival is approaching, boats have been prepared by the competing teams, ready to enter the competition.
