Presicce officials said they are willing to pay someone 30,000 USD, about 750 million VND, if they come here to buy a house and live.
The price of a house in this area is 25,000 USD, which means that anyone from far away will have a house, and an additional 5,000 USD to cover other expenses. However, the common point of these houses is that they have been abandoned by their previous owners for a long time.
The reason for this strange story is because the number of people in the town is on the decline. The idea has been applied in other regions of Italy such as Sardinia for $15,000, Calabria for $23,000, and Santo Stefano di Sessanio for up to $22,500.
However, you have to buy a house and become a resident of Presicce. The condition was that the houses were abandoned and had to be built before 1991.
Presicce authorities hope these incentives could breathe new life into the town, where the population is shrinking with very few newborns born each year.
There are many empty houses in the historical center of the city, built before 1991. We want to see them revive. It is a pity to see these areas of historical, architectural and artistic value gradually fall into emptiness, said Alfredo Palese, a local council member.
