Thailand - The moment lanterns flew into the sky, carrying the wishes of thousands of people during the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai is a beautiful memory for a Vietnamese girl.
Xuan Trang (21 years old) is studying abroad in Seoul, South Korea, and is coming to Chiang Mai, Thailand for the first time during the Yi Peng Lantern Festival. This trip was an unexpected coincidence because she had no previous plans and her friend accidentally left her a cheap ticket. She only had to spend 2 million VND for a Standard festival ticket and a night at a hotel. Not departing from Vietnam, Trang's group booked a flight from Seoul to Chiang Mai for 7.1 million VND/round trip. The flight time is about 5 and a half hours. Yi Peng festival tickets are usually sought after a year in advance, Xuan Trang's friend booked Standard class tickets from the beginning of 2024, so she only needed to book an additional hotel room and pay for travel and accommodation. This year's Yi Peng sky lantern festival takes place on November 15 and 16, attracting thousands of tourists from all over to participate and admire.Xuan Trang and her friends performed the ritual of writing wishes and releasing sky lanterns. The Yi Peng festival uses fire to light lanterns, which is very dangerous. Visitors must be very careful to avoid spreading the fire. In addition, it takes about 3-5 minutes for the lanterns to be fully inflated and able to fly.“This was the first time I participated in a sky lantern festival. There were countless memories, but the most special was the moment the lanterns flew up to the sky, joining the wishes of thousands of people there. Everything really touched me, the emotions still lingered when I got home and watched the old videos and photos that I couldn’t erase,” Xuan Trang recalled. The scene of the sky filled with bright lights and sparkling fire was like in a dream or a fairy tale. The Vietnamese girl called it the most wonderful moment in 2024 as well as in her 21 years of life. The fireworks will be launched for about 10 - 15 minutes in the middle when more sky lanterns start to fly up. The Vietnamese girl noted that when the fireworks are exploding, you should not release the lanterns but stop to enjoy the scenery, take videos and photos to save the memorable moment. The annual Yi Peng Festival sells 3 different ticket classes from cheap to expensive with preferential services: Standard, Premium and VIP. Xuan Trang suggested that with just the Standard ticket class, visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view of the night sky lit up with lights and the brilliant fireworks display. Not only participating in the lantern releasing activity, visitors who buy tickets to the Yi Peng festival can eat, buy souvenirs, watch religious performances... Xuan Trang advises that if you intend to go to the festival next year, you should book tickets, rooms and vehicles earlier, and on the day of participation, you should also arrive at the meeting point early to enjoy all the services in the purchased ticket package. This time, the two Vietnamese girls had to wait for the organizer's vehicle for 2 hours to get to the festival venue. Later than expected, there were not many activities left, making the experience less complete.Traveling to Chiang Mai for the first time, Xuan Trang did not miss the opportunity to explore more about this peaceful land in the north of Thailand. She and her friends visited two villages, Banrakthai and Maekampong, which are also famous for their natural landscapes and mild climate.Xuan Trang suggests combining the Yi Peng festival with exploring these villages, or the MaeHongSon area. These places often have many blooming flowers such as yellow wild sunflowers at the end of the year, the roads are mainly winding hills, if you rent a car to drive yourself, you need to be careful with your driving skills and good health. Although living in Korea, she is used to steep slopes, when coming to Chiang Mai, the Vietnamese girl was still "slightly shocked" by the roads here with curves every 50m.The Yi Peng Festival is a special event that takes place once a year, originating from the ancient Lanna kingdom. In the local language, Yi Peng means the second full moon day, and is an occasion for people to release lanterns with their wishes and hopes to fly to the sky. In 2025, Yi Peng will take place on November 5 and 6, and the festival website has started selling tickets starting at VND3.5 million.
