According to preserved documents, around the early 20th century, Dr. Yersin - the person who discovered the disease-causing strains - explored Hon Ba and in 1914 built a two-story wooden house on the top of the mountain as a place to live and do scientific research.
After he stopped using it, the house was abandoned and degraded, leaving only the foundation.
To commemorate his contributions, in 2005, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee allowed the restoration of the house with a similar structure on the old foundation.
The two-story house has a total floor area of about 200m2, a black painted wood structure, and a red-brown roof.
In 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism included the location of Dr. Yersin's workplace in the National Historical Relic Cluster.
The first floor currently displays images and artifacts about the life and career of the doctor. The second floor recreates the bedroom, workplace; there is a memorial area for him.
The items were consulted from the Yersin Museum and similar samples were purchased for display in accordance with the documentary image.
From the balcony of the 2nd floor, visitors can take a look at the whole scene of Hon Ba mountains and forests and the doctor's garden with all kinds of hydrangeas, rhubarb, and buyers...
Part of the old foundation has been redesigned into a resting and sightseeing spot.
Mr. Bui Toan (born in 1997, in Nam Nha Trang ward) shared that displaying artifacts helps young people better understand the life and simple personality of Dr. Yersin - who is affectionately called "Mr. Nam" by Khanh Hoa people.
To reach Hon Ba peak, visitors must cross a road longer than 50km from Nha Trang with many steep, winding corners in the primeval forest, the atmosphere changes clearly when rising.
Currently, people who want to visit must register for a tour (priced from 126,000 - 300,000 VND/person) or contact the Hon Ba Nature Reserve Management Board and do not enter the area without permission.
Tourists come here to burn incense to commemorate the dedicated doctor, and have a special experience of nature at an altitude of more than 1,500m, a place likened to "Miniature Sa Pa" in the Central region.
