Inside a homestay in a corner of an old bookstore in Hanoi

Hanoi - The name of the homestay in the old bookstore was inspired by the legendary work of the late 90s: "Almanach - the world's cultures".

Mao Bookstore is located on the 2nd floor of the apartment complex at 5 Dinh Le Street, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, which is famous for the name of Ms. Pham Thi Mao. From a small book selling table next to the sidewalk of the Post Office at the intersection of Dinh Tien Hoang - Dinh Le in the 90s to a book selling room on the 2nd floor of the apartment complex in the old quarter. For decades, she and her husband have nurtured a passion for books for many generations of intellectuals. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh
Maintaining her late mother's passion for books, Ms. Le Ngoc Anh took over the Mao bookstore and renovated many items. Since the end of 2024, she has launched the Almanach homestay from a bookstore that is over 30 years old. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh
The homestay has a floor area of about 40 m2, with a rental price of about more than 1 million VND/night. The first room is dedicated to a small family with a large bed. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh

On the floor, the book covers are tightly covered in a mixture of the typical green paint of the Mao bookstore.

The homestay is named after the book that changed the lives of the entire family of Mrs. Mao: Almanach - the world's cultures. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh
The closed homestay has full bathrooms, toilets, kitchens... and equipment. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh

The homestay has windows and a balcony overlooking Trang Tien Street.
Instead of TV, books are filled on the shelves. Visitors will be immersed in the space of books and stories and can borrow books from the main booth of the Mao bookstore right nearby. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh
In 7 years, since Mrs. Mao passed away and Ms. Ngoc Anh took on the responsibility of preserving and developing her mother's heritage, she changed the design 3 times and finally finalized the plan to open a homestay. A part of the oldest bookstore on Dinh Le book street has turned into a homestay, but Ms. Ngoc Anh always cherishes the dream of building a museum of precious books. Photo: Le Ngoc Anh
