On October 6, the Con Dao National Park Management Board announced that the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council (Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment) has just approved a number of additional trees in Con Dao district that meet the criteria for heritage trees.
Previously, Con Dao National Park had submitted a dossier to request recognition of 71 trees within its management area as heritage trees. Accordingly, the Council recognized 24 trees that met the criteria, including: a banyan tree at Hon Bay Canh, a banyan tree at Ong Dung beach, a black star tree at Bai Dai beach and a population of 21 Phong Ba trees at Hon Cau.
The banyan tree at Hon Bay Canh is about 237 years old, about 17m high and has a circumference of about 7m. The banyan tree at Ong Dung beach is smaller, about 155 years old and 14m high. The black star tree is about 237 years old, up to 25m high and has a circumference of 7.9m.
In the cluster of 21 Phong Ba trees, there is a tree that is 119 years old, with the largest circumference measuring 2.74m.
According to the Management Board of Con Dao National Park, up to now, there are a total of 103 heritage trees in the area, in the central area there are up to 76 trees of various types such as banyan, lagerstroemia, zinnia, and zinnia... distributed on many roads, prison areas, relics... and about 27 trees in the forest and small islands.
Among them, the banyan tree has the largest number with about 45 trees. The banyan tree in Con Dao is a forest tree with larger leaves and fruits than the banyan tree on the mainland.
