According to Channel News Asia, Mr. Wang Kun and Mr. Li Zhe arrived in Mexico City on June 10. On the way from Benito Juárez International Airport to the city center, the vehicle carrying the two people was suddenly stopped by two masked subjects and robbed of property.
For the first time in my life, I became a victim of a robbery," Mr. Wang shared in a video posted on Facebook, saying that one of the subjects pointed a gun at his head.
The two robbers, both wearing helmets and covering their faces, took away passports, luggage, laptops, cash and expensive watches of the two tourists.
The incident quickly attracted attention on Chinese social media platforms. Many users expressed concern about the security situation for foreign tourists.
The Chinese Embassy in Mexico on June 12 confirmed the robbery in a notice posted on its official WeChat account. The agency said it had worked with the Mexican side, requesting functional agencies to urgently arrest the perpetrators and implement specific measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in the host country.
The Embassy also advised Chinese citizens to be vigilant and limit carrying cash, jewelry and valuables when traveling.
In a further announcement on June 13, the Chinese Embassy said that Mexican authorities had arrested one of the two suspects involved in the incident. The investigation is still ongoing.
