According to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, guava leaf extract is part of ancient traditional medicines, to treat ailments such as coughs and lung diseases.
Guava contains vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, which can help treat cough symptoms, says Ayurvedic medicine expert Dr Chanchal Sharma. In addition, guava leaves contain many bioactive compounds, including essential oils and phenolic compounds that have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The mycolic properties of guava leaves help remove mucus from the respiratory tract and reduce the risk of coughing.
Dr Sharma added that the best time to use guava leaves to treat cough is in the morning on an empty stomach. By eating guava leaves directly or drinking guava leaf tea, the compounds in guava leaves are easily absorbed and effectively control cough throughout the day.
