Work helps women maintain identity and autonomy
In many Vietnamese families today, when the economy is temporarily stable, some women consider quitting their jobs full-time to focus on taking care of their family. However, many experts believe that maintaining a career is the foundation for women to live happier in marriage.
Dr. Laura Mitchell, University of Birmingham (UK), commented: Work gives women a sense of recognition and value, helping them avoid falling into a state of dependence and vulnerability in relationships. According to Ms. Mitchell, when women have their own space for development, they are less likely to experience emotional crises and maintain a balance between family and themselves, which is very necessary in a long-term married life.
Many women after temporarily suspending their careers have felt disappointed and lost connection with society. Work, although not too much pressure, is still a place where they can move their minds, communicate, learn and demonstrate their abilities. It is these connecting lines that help them not be limited to their roles as wives and mothers.
Income is not the only goal: Higher value is respect
The problem is not money, but autonomy. In many cases, when women are completely dependent on finances, their voice in the family is easily reduced, even if the husband has no intention of imposing it. A stable source of income, no matter how small, helps women feel confident in making decisions and are more respected in married dialogue.
Equality in the family begins with everyone being able to take care of their own lives, Dr. Mitchell emphasizes.
In addition, maintaining work also helps women feel "going with the speed" of society. When parents are busy, their children also learn to be independent, share responsibilities and understand that work is a natural part of life.
Women do not have to choose between family and career. Maintaining a suitable job, not too stressful, not causing time conflicts, is the way to help them stand firm, love life more and nurture a long-term marriage.
