This morning (March 28), the 94th Oscar Awards took place at the Dolby Theater, Los Angeles.
In the Best Supporting Actor category, Troy Kotsur, a deaf person, was named for his role as Frank Rossi in the film "CODA".
In CODA, Kotsur plays Frank Rossi, a fisherman in Gloucester. He lives in a family with a wife and a son who are both deaf. Kotsur's character has gone through a struggle to make her dream of becoming a singer for her little girl (who can listen) come true.
This award makes him the first deaf actor to receive an Oscar for his acting award.
Previously, Marlee Matlin was the first deaf-mute actress to win an Oscar in 1987, for her leading role in Children of a Lesser God.
Also at the ongoing awards ceremony, the Oscar gold statue for Best Supporting Actress went to Ariana DeBose for her performance in West Side Story.
DeBose has overcome other candidates such as Jessie Buckley, Judi Dench, Kirsten Dunst and stilluanue Ellis thanks to his role as Anita in director Steven Spielberg's classic musical. DeBose is also the first actor to publicly announce that he is a LGBTQ to win this category.
