The TV series "Family by Choice" just ended on the evening of November 27 with a viewership rating of 3.7%.
Although the rating was only average, the work still received the attention of a segment of the audience when it portrayed the story of 3 young people who are not related by blood but live together as a family.
In fact, before airing, "Choose to be a family member" was noticed as a remake of the Chinese film "In the name of family" (2020).
According to the Korea Times, while Korean films remade from Chinese historical dramas are quite popular, modern Chinese films like "Choose to Be a Family" are still quite rare. Therefore, the work easily attracts the younger generation of Korean audiences because of its light and fresh content.
The newspaper emphasized that although not as prominent as American or Japanese TV drama fans, the emergence of "Chinese TV drama fans" is reshaping the Korean streaming market.
According to a report by the Korea Creative Content Agency, as of April, platforms such as Tving, Wavve, and Watcha each offered more than 800 Chinese dramas, a sharp increase from the 300-400 available in 2021.
According to Wavve, Chinese dramas accounted for more than 50% of overseas TV viewership earlier this year, while Tving data shows that Chinese drama viewing hours increased by 261% from 2021 to 2023.
Among them, the works loved by audiences in their 20s in this country include "To the Beautiful Innocent Youth" (2017), "In the Name of the Family", "Thuong Lan Quyet" (2022), "To Me, He is a Dangerous Person" (2023), "Truong Phong Do" (2023)...
The sharp increase in the number of Chinese films on Korean streaming platforms shows the fierce competition between platforms to attract subscribers, especially the younger audience segment. However, it is worth noting the imbalance of Korean films in the domestic market.
According to the Korea Creative Content Agency, as of November 25, 2023, no new Korean dramas have been released on Chinese television or streaming platforms since "My Freedom Diary" in February 2023.
