According to the Golden Globe nomination list recently announced by the awards, the Korean survival horror film “Squid Game 2,” scheduled to be released on December 26, has been nominated in the category of Best Television Series – Drama.
Netflix's "Squid Game 2" will compete with Peacock's "The Day of the Jackal," Netflix's "The Diplomat," Prime Video's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," FX/Hulu's "Shogun" and Apple TV+'s "Slow Horses."
American media outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, have noted that it is rare for a series that has not yet been officially released to receive a nomination.
The unusual move was reportedly made possible because Netflix submitted the film to the Golden Globes jury early.
According to the award's rules, eligible films must be broadcast within the calendar year and submitted to the organizing committee before November 4.
The decision to release “Squid Game 2” during the holiday season marks a departure from traditional practice. Most U.S. networks avoid releasing new content late in the year, but Netflix’s timing of “Squid Game 2” helped the series qualify for this year’s Golden Globes.
Previously, the first part of “Squid Game” caused a stir at the 79th Golden Globe Awards in 2022, when it won 3 nominations: best drama, best actor for Lee Jung Jae and best supporting actor for O Yeong Su.
O Yeong Su became the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe.
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 5, 2025.
