Unstable judges and coaches
This year, Karik and Suboi return as coaches. JustaTee and Thai VG sit on the judges' chairs and are assisted by guest rapper F.Hero.
However, F.Hero spoke Thai when commenting on the contestants and occasionally communicated in English. Thai VG still caused controversy because of his "stammering" Vietnamese and his English when speaking.
When the three judges debated, they used many different languages, causing MC Tran Thanh to exclaim: "I wonder if they understand each other"!
In the coaching row, B Ray's appearance created a wave of protest. Many people wanted to stop watching Rap Viet this year because a scandalous face like B Ray was still allowed to sit in the "hot seat".
"Overeating" gold
In addition to the yellow hat, Rap Viet 2024 adds a new support right for coaches, the yellow lock. Coaches with a yellow lock will not be allowed to debate or invite contestants to their team.
In the first episode, the coaches continuously gave each other golden locks and threw golden hats to the contestants, even though some people thought that those performances were not really explosive.
In the end, when B Ray or Karik used the golden key to eliminate strong opponents, they still got the contestant because of the privilege called "First choice".
Each coach has 1 First choice, and does not reveal the identity of this contestant until the contestant has completed choosing a team.
Therefore, this privilege creates last-minute "twists", making the coaches and audience go from one surprise to another.
However, the continuous use of features and privileges to win contestants makes episode 1 of Rap Viet considered a joke by the organizers to increase the entertainment value of the program.
Since then, very interesting features that are rarely used such as golden hats and golden locks have been used "everywhere", reducing the value of the privileges whenever the coach wants to attract candidates to the team.
Overuse of emotional appeal
Episode 1 is nearly 3 hours long, with notable names including Shayda, Tieu Minh Phung, and 7dnight.
The personal stories and hidden corners of the contestants' lives are also thoroughly exploited, such as the 17-year-old rapper who lost both his parents and was taken by his grandmother to compete in Rap Viet; 7dnight, who worked abroad for 7 years and had an inferiority complex because his hand only had 2 fingers; Shayda, who was once famous for singing folk songs in The Voice Kids but admitted that she did not like singing this genre of music...
Therefore, each candidate can spend dozens of minutes talking about their circumstances, confiding their ambitions, and also spend a lot of time choosing a coach.
When it premiered, episode 1 of Rap Viet recorded more than 300,000 live viewers, showing the show's appeal and high entertainment value.
Question of bias
After episode 1, the name that was mentioned the most was Shayda. Her performance was rated as average, singing more than rapping, showing off little rap technique, but she was chosen by 4 coaches and was awarded 2 golden hats.
The fact that Shayda's performance used the song "Hao quang" which caused a stir on Brother Say Hi, with both Duong Domic and Phap Kieu assisting, also made the audience question whether this rookie was favored and pampered more than other contestants.
The online community also calls Rap Viet a "side story" of Brother Say Hi when there are 4 "brothers" participating with different roles.
In addition to Phap Kieu and Duong Domic assisting Shayda, Ali Hoang Duong also assisted in a performance, and Quang Hung MasterD appeared to... give flowers to F.Hero.
