Early Admission is Unfair to Students
On August 9, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) organized the 2024 Higher Education Conference.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Phuc, Vice Rector of the University of Technology - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, proposed considering abolishing the early admission method.
Explaining this proposal, Dr. Phuc stated: “When early admission is considered, students have not yet completed their high school education. Not to mention, some counselors in recent times have advised or required students to register for early admission on the first priority. This is incorrect, but they have done it quietly. I believe this will be unfair and deprive students of opportunities."
Dr. Phuc also stated that introducing multiple admission methods and allocating different percentages for each method is not based on any grounds, causing unfairness to students who apply for different methods.
Autonomy but with Higher Social Responsibility
Regarding this issue, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son reminded universities to enhance their autonomy but also to take greater responsibility for general education.

According to Minister Son, universities use too many methods, leave many early admission slots, and have few slots for admission based on high school graduation exam results, causing high admission scores and unfairness.
“Early admission has negative impacts on general education in the final stages of high school. Therefore, we need to consider this in the future. Because students who have met the requirements for early admission will not attend school anymore. This is very harmful.
Universities only care about the number of students who will enroll in their institutions, while the remaining students will have limited opportunities, resulting in high admission scores and unfairness in the opportunity to enter top universities. We will consider this and incorporate it into the guidance for university admissions in the next year” - Minister Son said.
Minister of Education and Training also reminded universities not to have too many admission methods.
"The simpler, the better, it is convenient for students and society. Universities have autonomy in admissions, but this does not mean they can do whatever they want. Autonomy is within the framework of regulations. Therefore, the Ministry can increase some frameworks and penalties to regulate admissions next year. Autonomy but with higher social responsibility" - Minister Nguyen Kim Son emphasized.
Minister Son also stated that the results show that there is a sufficient number of applicants, and reputable universities do not need to worry.
“Therefore, there is no need to 'compete and push' - Minister Son said.
