Adjusting parking fees at smart parking lots in Da Nang City

Nguyễn Linh |

Excessively high parking fees in Da Nang not only affect the lives of local people but also reduce the city's attractiveness to tourists.

Slow sales due to high prices

Parking lot No. 166 Hai Phong (phase 1) has a total investment of more than 76 billion VND from the Da Nang city budget. The project uses a prefabricated steel structure, including 5 blocks of 6 floors with 173 parking spaces operating according to a puzzle system. The project is invested by the Da Nang City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board and is also the unit currently operating the trial (starting from March 2024). However, since its inauguration, this parking lot has been deserted despite being located right in the city center.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Cuong - a resident of Da Nang - suggested: "We hope that the authorities will take strong measures to prevent illegal parking on the roadside. To avoid traffic jams and congestion during rush hour."

According to Mr. Cuong, drivers should park in designated areas, especially near parking lot 166 Hai Phong. This is a densely populated area with many large hospitals and schools.

Parking lot 166 Hai Phong also "heated up" the 21st session of the People's Council of Da Nang city, term X, 2021 - 2026 because it did not promote efficiency after many years of investment and construction.

Mr. Le Van Dung - People's Council Delegate - reflected that the 166 Hai Phong parking lot has been in operation for many years. However, the number of vehicles entering and leaving the lot is very low, only reaching 6% of the parking lot's capacity, causing waste and not promoting investment efficiency.

"According to people's feedback, the parking fee is quite high compared to their needs," said delegate Dung.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Vo Tin - People's Council Delegate - said that currently, parking lot No. 166 Hai Phong has come into operation but the number of vehicles parked is very small. Many people do not park in the parking lot but park along the roads in the parking lot, often causing traffic congestion.

Proposal to adjust parking fees

Mr. Bui Hong Trung - Director of the Department of Transport of Da Nang City - admitted that the parking lot 166 Hai Phong has not yet promoted the effectiveness of the parking lot. One of the reasons, according to Mr. Trung, is that people do not like to leave their cars here to walk to where they need to go, but prefer to use their cars to directly access that place.

"We will increase the handling of violations of parking on the street, especially in locations with no-parking signs. We will also increase information about parking locations so that people in remote areas can know the official parking locations to implement," said Mr. Bui Hong Trung.

To encourage people to park their cars in parking lots, the Director of the Department of Transport has proposed that the City People's Committee agree to allow adjusting parking service prices more appropriately and expanding the types of parking vehicles. Along with promoting investment calls, the Department of Transport will study and propose that the City People's Committee reduce land rental prices for parking locations, in order to reduce investment costs and create favorable conditions for people to park their cars in parking lots.
