Recently, the Hanoi Department of Transport has proposed that the city build a light overpass at the Chau Van Liem - Le Quang Dao intersection (Nam Tu Liem district) along with 4 other key intersections in Thanh Xuan, Long Bien and Gia Lam districts.
This agency considers the construction of lightweight overpasses an effective solution to solve traffic congestion at intersections.
The Chau Van Liem - Le Quang Dao intersection (Nam Tu Liem district) has long been an area with high traffic volume, often experiencing traffic jams during rush hour.
After the city piloted removing traffic lights and reorganizing traffic, traffic congestion here has shown signs of cooling down.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc (35 years old, Nam Tu Liem district), recently, the number of vehicles has increased very rapidly, especially in Hanoi, causing the traffic network to be overloaded.
Faced with increasing traffic pressure, Mr. Ngoc believes that building an overpass at the Chau Van Liem - Le Quang Dao intersection will help vehicles move continuously without having to stop, and at the same time help reduce congestion on the roads around the area.
"The city also needs to carefully calculate to come up with a suitable plan, to avoid spending hundreds of billions of dong to build overpasses that are ineffective or have low efficiency, causing waste," said Mr. Ngoc.
In fact, the plan to build light overpasses at intersections has shown clear effectiveness, helping to solve many traffic jam "black spots" in Hanoi.
In 2012, facing frequent traffic jams at the intersections of Tay Son - Chua Boc and Lang Ha - Thai Ha (Dong Da district), Hanoi considered the option of building a lightweight overpass with a steel structure to reduce traffic jams.
Two steel overpasses at the Tay Son - Chua Boc and Lang Ha - Thai Ha intersections were put into operation in April 2012, after 100 days of construction. Both projects are designed for both motorbikes and cars.
From the effectiveness of the first two projects, many other light overpasses have been built and put into use by the city. Most recently, there is the overpass at the Hong Tien - Nguyen Van Cu intersection (Long Bien district), and two overpass units at the Mai Dich intersection (Cau Giay district).
Experts say that the steel overpass construction plan is an urgent solution chosen by Hanoi City in the face of the current situation where many intersections have become overloaded, while there are not enough conditions to complete the intersections.
These are light overpasses but still basically meet the daily traffic volume, contributing to reducing traffic congestion at key intersections in Hanoi.
