In April 2008, the Hanoi Southern Axis Road Construction Investment Project (formerly known as the Ha Tay Southern Axis Road Construction Investment Project) started construction.
With a total route length of more than 41km, connecting from Ha Dong through Thanh Oai, Phu Xuyen, Ung Hoa districts and connecting with National Highway 1A under Cau Gie in Chau Can commune, Phu Xuyen district, the Southern axis road project is oriented to become an economic and social development axis when passing through many industrial parks, administrative and cultural areas in the South of the city.
The project has a total construction cost of about 6,000 billion VND, implemented in the form of BT (build - transfer). The investment capital is matched by land use fees of 3 projects: Thanh Ha A Urban Area (195.5ha), Thanh Ha B Urban Area (193.22ha), My Hung Urban Area (182ha).
By 2018, the project had put into operation 18.5km from Ha Dong to the end of Thanh Oai district. The remaining 23km have not been completed, of which 14km is in Ung Hoa district and 9km is in Phu Xuyen district.
According to the Hanoi Department of Transport, of the 23km of the project, 20km have been cleared; the remaining 3km (mainly in Ung Hoa district) is facing difficulties related to 23 resettled households. The district People's Committee has committed to completing it in the second quarter of 2025.
The second major problem is the approval of project adjustment. This project is a transition from the BT investment model of the former Ha Tay Provincial People's Committee. To resolve common problems of transitional projects, the Government will report to the National Assembly for comprehensive solutions.
At the question-and-answer session of the 20th meeting of the Hanoi People's Council on December 11, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan said that recently, Phu Xuyen and Ung Hoa districts have tried to implement the project after a long period of stagnation.
"The project has started to be actively implemented. Investors and units are committed to completing the Southern axis road project by 2025," the Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee affirmed.
