Walking around the market in her residential area, Ms. Hoang Thu Trang (Cau Giay, Hanoi) also chose to buy a bunch of bananas for the 2025 Lunar New Year fruit tray.
Despite being warned that banana prices this year might be higher than last year due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi, Ms. Trang was still shocked when the price was quoted at half a million VND per bunch. After calculating, she decided to choose another bunch at a more affordable price.
"At first, I chose a bunch of bananas with an odd number of bananas and was quoted 500,000 VND. It was too expensive so I had to choose a bunch with an even number of bananas for 300,000 VND," said Ms. Trang.
According to Lao Dong's records at many traditional markets in Cau Giay area, the price of green bananas this year ranges from about 200,000 to more than 500,000 VND/bunch, depending on the size, odd or even number of fruits, shape, etc.
Ms. Le Ha My - a trader from Lang Son to Hanoi said that the price fluctuates around 60,000 VND/kg, each bunch of green bananas weighs at least 3kg, the selling price of each bunch is around 200,000 - 300,000 VND. However, the price will have a difference between bunches with odd and even numbers of bananas.
“The price of green bananas this year is more expensive than previous years due to storms and floods, and a scarce supply. My family has a 40-hectare banana garden but has only harvested 10 hectares. The goods are scarce, so the price has to be increased,” said My, affirming that the average price this year is 200,000 – 300,000 VND/bunch of bananas, which is cheap.
Ms. Ha My started selling on the 22nd of Tet (January 21) and in just 4 days, she sold tons of bananas.
"Bananas are expensive this year but there are no products to sell" - Ms. My said.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha - a trader in Nghia Tan market (Cau Giay) also confirmed that this year there are bunches of bananas sold for over 500,000 VND.
"My family sells green bananas for around 200,000 - 250,000 VND/bunch" - Ms. Ha said.
Ms. Vu Thi Lien (Cau Giay, Hanoi) also felt shocked by the green banana market this year.
"In previous years, I bought the same bunch of bananas for only about 1/3 the price. If it gets too expensive in the next few days, I will consider replacing the green bananas with another fruit," Lien shared.
