Ensuring sufficient electricity is a prerequisite for green transformation

Green transition is not just replacing gasoline cars with electric cars or reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The prerequisite is to have enough electricity at reasonable prices, stable supply and increasingly greener.

According to the leader of the Electricity Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), ensuring power supply security in the coming period will be a decisive factor for Vietnam to realize its double-digit economic growth target and promote the green transition process.

The big problem behind the electric vehicle trend

Vietnam is facing a major transformation. From industrial production to transportation, from business consumption to people's lives, all are aiming for the goal of reducing emissions and using cleaner energy.

However, to successfully transition to green, the most important question is not when people will switch to using electric vehicles, but whether the national power system is capable of meeting the increasing electricity demand.

Talking to Lao Dong reporter, Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu - Deputy Director of the Electricity Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said: Vietnam's energy and electricity demand will continue to increase sharply in the coming years along with the economic growth target of 10% or more in the period 2026-2030.

According to Mr. Vu, providing enough electricity for socio-economic development plays a particularly important role.

Although Vietnam has basically ensured electricity sources for production and life in the past, there are still many challenges when electricity consumption demand increases rapidly, while domestic energy sources are increasingly under pressure.

Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu commented: "Our country's energy industry still has many limitations, the goal of ensuring national energy security is still challenging, domestic supply is not enough to meet requirements, and the proportion of primary energy to be imported is increasing.

This is also the reason why the development of domestic power sources, especially renewable energy, is becoming an urgent requirement.

If electric transportation is strongly electrified in the near future, millions of personal electric vehicles, electric buses, electric taxis and electric transport vehicles will significantly increase electricity demand. At that time, the electricity system not only needs to have sufficient capacity but also must be green enough for the transition process to truly bring environmental benefits.

Wind and solar power will solve the green growth problem

According to leaders of the Electricity Department, to both meet electricity demand to serve economic growth and implement commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Vietnam needs to promote the development of renewable energy.

In recent years, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has advised on perfecting many important mechanisms and policies for the electricity and renewable energy sectors; and at the same time implemented adjustments to the Power Plan VIII in the direction of prioritizing green and clean energy sources.

Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu said that the planning adjustment is carried out with the goal: "Maximally exploiting all potentials and advantages of the country to develop energy, in order to improve autonomy in providing sufficient electricity for socio-economic development and people's living needs in the upcoming accelerated development phase, meeting the goal of double-digit economic growth.

According to him, developing renewable energy is no longer an option but an inevitable direction.

To ensure the security of electricity supply to Vietnam, meet commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, respond to climate change, develop renewable energy, especially wind and solar power, is an inevitable direction, suitable to Vietnam's potential strengths and world development trends," Mr. Vu emphasized.

It is noteworthy that the electricity problem for green transformation is not only in building more power plants but also in developing a synchronous transmission system.

Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW of the Politburo has requested "Developing a synchronous transmission grid system with power source development, capable of integrating large-scale renewable and new energy sources.

This is considered an important link for wind and solar power to maximize efficiency.

To realize this goal, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is continuing to improve institutions, remove legal bottlenecks, accelerate the progress of power source and grid projects; and encourage all economic sectors to participate in investing in the electricity industry.

According to Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu, three key groups of solutions in the coming time include perfecting mechanisms and policies, promoting the progress of power projects and diversifying investment capital sources.

With synchronous solutions from the legal framework in electricity development and project investment deployment, I believe that investors will have enough legal framework to implement power projects in general, and renewable energy projects in particular to realize the sustainable energy development strategy of Vietnam," Mr. Vu said.

It can be seen that the transition from gasoline to electric vehicles is only the tip of the iceberg of the green transition process. The real foundation lies in building a sufficiently strong, sufficiently stable and increasingly green electrical system.

When clean electricity is developed on a large scale, Vietnam will not only solve the energy problem for the goal of double-digit growth but also create a solid foundation for a low-emission economy in the coming decades.
