Removing bottlenecks from nurseries to planted forests
The journey of commercializing this precious medicinal material requires a stable and quality supply. However, production in the growing areas is under great pressure from epidemics and erratic weather changes.
Speaking about the current situation of seedling sources, research on Ngoc Linh ginseng by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Thi Hong Hai pointed out that: "Currently, due to changes in weather and climate as well as gradual reduction in forest area, areas growing Ngoc Linh ginseng are heavily infected with the disease of young plants dying, causing very heavy damage in nurseries, the disease rate is very high, some households have the phenomenon of losing all the seedlings sown and nurtured".
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Thi Hong Hai, treating seeds with nano chitosan and spraying trichoderma for ginseng seedlings supports improving germination rates, limiting the rate of mortality, leading to an increase in the rate of seedlings meeting garden setting standards.
Research on farming techniques by Master Tran Ut (currently Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Da Nang City) also analyzed: "The technique of growing Ngoc Linh ginseng of farmers is mainly based on customs and experiences exchanged among local communities, so production efficiency is not high, the forest environment is affected, and it is especially difficult to control pests and diseases.
Therefore, the method of preparing soil for planting Ngoc Linh ginseng without excavating forest soil surface, without raising beds, and keeping the undergrowth layer appropriately will bring higher efficiency than methods of clearing undergrowth, excavating soil, and raising beds to plant ginseng.
Abandoning the thinking of selling raw to elevate the brand
Although expected to become an economic support for people and businesses, the development of Ngoc Linh ginseng in Da Nang is still caught up in old business habits: Mainly selling fresh raw ginseng tubers.
Mr. Ho Quang Buu - Vice Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee - emphasized: "The development of Ngoc Linh Ginseng and medicinal materials still faces many difficulties. Production scale is not commensurate with potential, linkage chains are still limited, deep processing technology has not developed strongly, and the work of protecting medicinal material resources still faces many challenges.
City government leaders affirmed that the locality is determined to shift the economic model, gradually abandoning the unprocessed raw selling method to focus on improving product value through modern technology.
Mr. Ho Quang Buu expressed: "Da Nang city really hopes to receive many enthusiastic, responsible and highly practical opinions and discussions from managers, experts, scientists and the business community. These opinions will be an important basis for the city to study.
