Businesses save billions thanks to solar power

Rooftop solar power helps many businesses save billions of VND each month, while promoting green transformation and reducing emissions.

Businesses increase rooftop solar power installation, helping to save electricity bills

At about 6 am, thousands of panels covering the roof of the factory of Ngan Long Science and Technology Co., Ltd. (Quang Ninh) began to generate electricity, forming a "power plant" in the business premises. The company specializes in producing textile fibers, with more than 2,000 employees. Before installing solar power, the business had to spend 40-60 billion VND on electricity each month.

When the system comes into operation, about 8-10% of the power demand of the plant is met by electricity produced right on the roof. This helps businesses save an average of 5-6 billion VND per month; in sunny months, savings can reach 6-7 billion VND.

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Pham Xuan Gioi - Electricity Manager of Ngan Long Science and Technology Co., Ltd. - informed that the enterprise has invested about 150 billion VND to install rooftop solar power systems. This is one of the largest investments of the enterprise in the energy sector in recent years.

Rooftop solar power not only helps businesses significantly reduce electricity costs but also contributes to promoting the green transformation process, meeting the increasingly strict standards of the export market" - Mr. Gioi said.

A few dozen kilometers away, at Hai Ha Industrial Park, the roofs of the factories of Ngan Ha Technical Technology Co., Ltd. are also covered with solar panels.

With a total capacity of more than 20MW, the self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power system is helping Ngan Ha Technical Technology Co., Ltd. save from 5.6-6.3 billion VND in electricity bills per month. However, this savings only meets a very large part of the power demand of the plant. Each month, the enterprise still has to spend from 75-84 billion VND to buy electricity from the grid to serve production.

According to Mr. Ca Van Cuong - Electricity Manager of Ngan Ha Technical Technology Co., Ltd., in the context that export markets are increasingly placing strict requirements on using clean energy and sustainable development, investing in rooftop solar power is becoming a new competitive advantage for businesses.

At the same time, this is also an important plus point for industrial parks in attracting high-quality investment capital, especially multinational corporations prioritizing the selection of production locations that meet green growth and emission reduction criteria.

In Hai Phong City, panels on the roofs of factories of FLAT Vietnam Company, DEEP C Industrial Park generate electricity from early morning. At about 5-6 pm, when workers finish their shifts, the system's capacity also gradually decreases.

On sunny days, the system achieves peak capacity of more than 9MW, equivalent to 80-85% of designed capacity, meeting about one-third of the power demand of the plant. On average, each day, businesses save about 100 million VND on electricity purchase costs from the national grid.

Rooftop solar power expands scale

According to Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), in the first half of this year, the unit developed about 8,500 more rooftop solar power customers with a total capacity of nearly 395MW, far exceeding the plan in both the number of customers and capacity. By the end of June 2026, EVNNPC had more than 10,000 customers with a total capacity of over 718MW.

Previously, solar power mainly appeared in some large enterprises, but now the model has expanded to households, schools, medical facilities and state agency headquarters.

Hai Phong is the leading locality in developing rooftop solar power in the North, by the end of June 2026 there are 967 installation customers with a total capacity of about 60MW. This local power company aims to increase to 1,200 customers with a total capacity of 110MW this year.

In Quang Ninh, many localities are promoting the development of this model. In Hai Ha district (old), about 139 customers installed rooftop solar power with a total capacity of about 1.6MW. Representatives of Hai Ha Power Company shared that they have coordinated with the government to survey the needs of each household, school and medical center instead of applying a common model.

According to EVNNPC, despite the rapid development speed, rooftop solar power still cannot completely replace grid electricity. In fact, power generation output depends on weather conditions and only meets the needs well during the day. At night or in sunny days, the national power system still has to undertake most of the consumption demand. Therefore, the expansion of this model needs to be accompanied by simplifying procedures related to construction, fire prevention and fighting, as well as the problem of operating the power system.
