Engraved melons sell out Mr. Nguyen Hoang Duy - a gardener in Lam Kiet commune (Thanh Tri district, Soc Trang province) - said that his family's Tet melon crop this year was successful when more than 1,000 pairs of engraved melons were ordered by customers.
The elaborately hand-carved words such as "Tai", "Loc", "Van Su", "Vinh Hoa", "Phu Quy", "Phat Tai" create a difference and attract consumers.
To create these unique melons, Mr. Duy had to hire more workers to complete the engraving process while the melons were still on the tree. With a price of 420,000 - 450,000 VND/pair, significantly higher than regular melons, the product is still sought after.Mr. Duy estimated that the revenue from engraved melons alone reached more than 400 million VND.
"In recent years, consumers tend to choose engraved melons to display during Tet or as gifts, so the market is also bustling."On the occasion of Tet 2025 alone, orders increased by more than 30%," said Mr. Duy.
Sharing about the technique, Mr. Duy said that the melon chosen for engraving must meet 3 criteria: round, even, and beautiful. The right time to engrave is when the melon weighs 1.6 - 1.7 kg, at which time the rind has a moderate thickness, and the engraving heals quickly; after that time, the melon rind is thick, difficult to engrave, and the letters are not beautiful.
Commercial melons are also in high demand.
In addition to engraved melons, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Duy's family also supplied the market with 8 tons of commercial melons at 60,000 VND/kg, bringing in an additional 480 million VND.
Currently, all have been purchased by customers."The melons all weigh 1.8 - 2.2 kg.They have uniform shapes, beautiful colors, are crispy and sweet. This melon crop promises to bring my family a prosperous Tet," Mr. Duy happily said.
Similarly, gardener Huynh Viet Trung in Tan Long commune (Nga Nam town, Soc Trang province) is also busy harvesting 3 tons of melons to deliver to purchasing units."This is the time when the melons are at their ripest, and they are sold out as soon as they are cut. This year, demand has increased so the output is very favorable. The selling price ranges from 35,000 - 60,000 VND/kg.This is a favorable price for gardeners," said Mr. Trung.
Mr. Trung said that growing melons in greenhouses helps to better control weather, temperature, and weight factors, as well as limit pests and diseases, making the melons more beautiful.
