The escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine has raised geopolitical tensions beyond levels seen during the more than year-long conflict between Israel and Iran-backed forces, analysts say.
Market attention has now shifted to growing concerns about the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, analysts said. Russia is the world’s second-largest crude exporter after Saudi Arabia, so a major disruption there could impact global supplies.
What the market fears is the destruction of any oil, gas and refining facilities, as this would not only cause long-term damage but would also accelerate the spiral of conflict.
China, the world’s largest oil importer, announced policy measures this week to boost trade, including supporting energy imports, amid concerns the United States will impose steep tariffs on Chinese imports.
