Target to achieve over 70% of tea area certified clean and safe
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), it is forecasted that by 2030, Vietnam's tea export output will reach 156 thousand tons, increasing by an average of 0.83% per year, accounting for about 80% of the tea output produced nationwide. The main markets for Vietnamese tea products are still Pakistan, China, Russia, Indonesia... Vietnam is also shifting to exporting high-quality tea products to the European market (EU)...
Vietnam's tea industry is developing in a sustainable direction, meeting market demands, and taking full advantage of the benefits from trade agreements that have been and are being signed.
According to the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the Key Industrial Crop Project was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Decision No. 431/QD-BNN-TT dated January 26, 2024, setting the target: By 2030, the tea growing area nationwide will reach about 120-125 thousand hectares, the yield will reach 110-115 quintals/ha; the output will reach about 1.2-1.4 million tons of fresh tea buds.
Of which, the tea area applying IPM/IPHM (standards for plant pest management/integrated plant health management - PV) reached 90%; the tea area applying good and safe production processes (GlobalGAP, VietGAP, organic and equivalent...) accounted for over 70%; the proportion of tea area granted growing area codes associated with product traceability reached over 70%...
By 2030, over 70% of the tea area will be certified as clean and safe, concentrated in key production areas such as Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Nghe An and Lam Dong, applying high technology in production stages to improve productivity, quality, and stabilize product criteria to meet market demand.
Vietnamese tea brand on new commercial path
On the morning of November 5, 2024, speaking at the forum "Connecting production and consumption of high-quality tea" organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Gardening Association, Mr. Hoang Vinh Long - Chairman of the Vietnam Tea Association - emphasized: Currently, there are a few models of agricultural - industrial linkage in the tea industry. These models have proven to be effective and relatively sustainable development models, such as: Ha Tinh Tea Joint Stock Company (Ha Tinh), Bien Ho Tea One Member Co., Ltd. (Gia Lai), My Lam Tea Joint Stock Company (Tuyen Quang), Than Uyen Tea Joint Stock Company (Lai Chau)...
Localities have also focused on building safe, high-quality tea areas. Ha Giang province has nearly 21,000 hectares of tea, of which more than 70% is ancient Shan Tuyet tea. Identifying this as a crop with high economic efficiency, from 2016 to present, Ha Giang has implemented many support programs with an investment capital of more than 56 billion VND, focusing on granting GAP certification for nearly 12,000 hectares. Ha Giang has also built and recognized the geographical indication "Ha Giang Shan Tuyet Tea" for nearly 17,000 hectares of tea in the province.
Since 2017, Thai Nguyen province has issued the "Project to increase added value, sustainably develop tea trees and brand of Thai Nguyen tea products in the period of 2017-2020", focusing on investment, supporting people to increase acreage, replace old tea fields with new tea varieties with better productivity and quality; supporting investment in processing and packaging technology, improving product design, and promoting brands. To date, Thai Nguyen has 17,824 hectares of new tea varieties, accounting for nearly 80% of the area; nearly 2,500 hectares of tea are certified by VietGAP, hundreds of hectares of tea are produced according to organic standards.
Tuyen Quang province has also produced tea products that ensure food safety according to EU standards, helping to reduce production costs, finished tea products are sold at higher prices, the market is expanded and stabilized thanks to production technology that meets food safety standards and management of large corporations in the world...
