Purchasing power increases, retailers replenish goods for Tet holiday

Can Tho - With shopping demand likely to increase at the end of the year, shops and retailers plan to increase the amount of goods for Tet by 10-20% compared to the same period last year.

Increase the quantity of goods for Tet holiday

At this time, purchasing power at the department store of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ut Chinh (O Mon District, Can Tho City) has increased slightly, focusing on essential goods. According to Ms. Chinh, many customers have started to consult the prices of some types of cakes, jams and Tet gift baskets even though the store has not imported them yet.

With consumer demand and a thriving business situation, this year, Ms. Chinh plans to increase 15% of Tet products such as cakes, jams, soft drinks and gift basket wrapping accessories.

Specializing in wholesale and retail of rice products, trader Tran Thi Chau (Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City) said that compared to the same period in 2023, consumer purchasing power is currently about 15% higher. The types of rice in high demand have prices ranging from 18,000 - 25,000 VND/kg.

With current purchasing power, Ms. Chau estimates that demand for Tet will continue to increase. To meet consumer demand, retailers plan to increase their rice imports by about 20%. In addition to popular products such as Nang Thom, Huong Lai, and ST25, Ms. Chau will add more types of sticky rice due to the strong demand for making cakes during Tet.

Proactively source goods early

To take advantage of good prices as well as limit the shortage of goods during Tet, Ms. Chinh contacted to consult and deposit early on some items, focusing on the types of cakes and jams that consumers are most interested in.

“Through contact with large stores, the prices of cakes and jams are not much different from last year. However, to prevent cakes and jams from selling out near the date and lacking supply, I decided to make a deposit early to be more proactive,” said Ms. Chinh.

Before rice prices started to increase slightly in the last months of the year, Ms. Chau has now made deposits with warehouse owners to have enough supply for the Lunar New Year market. This trader said that every year, near Tet, consumer demand increases sharply, often leading to an increase in the prices of many rice products. If the price of rice is too expensive, even during Tet, consumption will be difficult due to consumers' preference for cheap goods.
