Saint-Gobain uses biomass fuel to produce green cement sheets

Vinh Phú |

On October 13, Saint-Gobain Vietnam announced important steps in the green energy transition journey at Hiep Phu-VICO factory (Quang Tri province). The factory has pioneered the successful application of biomass fuel in the production process of DURAflex® Low carbon green cement film, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 74% per m2 of product. This is a premise to help Saint-Gobain Vietnam aim for the first carbon-neutral (CO2 zero-emission) factory model in the construction materials industry in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Recognizing the great potential of biomass fuel created from agricultural by-products when Vietnam has more than 60 million tons/year, Saint-Gobain Vietnam has pioneered the application of this new fuel in the production line. This initiative not only opens a new direction for the construction materials industry but also demonstrates Saint-Gobain Vietnam's strong commitment to promoting the building of a green, environmentally friendly economy.

Saint-Gobain Vietnam has cooperated with Vietnamese partner Zerowaste to deploy a boiler system using high-tech biomass fuel for Hiep Phu'VICO factory. This new system replaces 100% of traditional fuel (DO oil), ensuring a capacity of 5 tons of steam/hour to serve the process of producing DURAflex® Low Carbon green cement film.

The source of biometric materials used for the system is purchased from 100% of saw, wood chips, rice, and recycled fuel from waste (RDF) in the locality and neighboring provinces.

Replacing biomass fuel in the DURAflex® Low carbon production line helps the plant reduce more than 74% of CO2/m2 emissions, of which 43% comes from optimizing the production process, reducing energy consumption, and more than 31% comes from this fuel application.
