On October 21, Samsung finally launched its long-awaited foldable phone - the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition.

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is Samsung's thinnest and largest foldable smartphone ever, and features an impressive camera system never seen before on the Galaxy Z Fold series.

On the official website, Samsung sent a "thank you to customers who love the Galaxy Fold", along with the specifications and price of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (Z Fold SE).

The most impressive thing about the Z Fold SE is that it's incredibly thin, measuring just 10.6mm when closed and 4.9mm when open. Of course, the comparison is limited to Samsung's Z Fold line, as many Chinese book-style folding devices are currently under 10mm thick.

The Z Fold Special Edition measures 157.9 x 142.6 x 4.9mm when open and 157.9 x 72.8 x 10.6mm when closed, with a fairly light weight of 236g, so the device is not large, but it does not exude the elegance of the Honor Magic V3 foldable phone.

No S Pen support

To achieve a more elegant design, Samsung has removed S Pen stylus support on the Z Fold SE, as previously rumored, as this would have added to the thickness of the digitizer layer.

The special edition of the Z Fold also comes in just one color, Black Shadow, with a “linear pattern design” on the metal-like finish. However, the display is different from the one on the Z Fold 6.

Screen

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition has a 7.99-inch display, the largest Samsung has ever put on a foldable phone. The display has a resolution of 2184 x 1968 (QXGA+) pixels, a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits, and a dynamic refresh rate of 120 Hz.

On the other hand, the outer screen measures 6.5 inches with a resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels (FHD+), has an aspect ratio of 21: 9, giving the feeling of using it like a regular smartphone when folded.

Camera

Aside from its record-breaking thinness (for Samsung), the Z Fold SE also boasts another notable set of specs, this time in the rear camera department, with a 200MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP telephoto camera.

The rear camera is capable of 3x optical zoom or 2x optical zoom using adaptive pixel sensors, as well as up to 30x digital zoom. This is far behind the once-foldable Chinese phone or Google, which is using a periscope zoom lens. The new phone also has a 10MP external selfie camera and a 4MP under-display selfie camera.

Processor and battery

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy chip, combined with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It also comes pre-installed with Android 14, and will receive 7 major Android updates.

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition's rated battery capacity is 4,272 mAh, which is lower than some Chinese competitors.

Price

The special edition Z Fold has a starting price in Korea of more than 2,000 USD (more than 51 million VND), about 500 USD higher than the starting price of the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Samsung has now opened pre-orders for the Z Fold Special Edition and will launch it on October 25, starting in Korea and then in China.
